250€ PER MONTH FOR 50 HOURS OF WORK PER WEEK? 1,25€ PER HOUR !

Police officers from the National Police have apprehended a construction entrepreneur in Calvià, Manacor, who has been accused of committing a crime against workers’ rights. The entrepreneur had employees working on construction projects who were subjected to 50-hour workweeks and received no more than 250 euros in payment. As of now, six victims of labor exploitation have been identified. Additionally, the suspect had an international arrest warrant from his home country, which led to his confinement in Palma prison.

The incidents, as reported by the Provincial Chief, trace back to the previous day 7. After a six-month investigation, the Immigration unit in Manacor arrested the entrepreneur in Santa Ponça within the boundaries of Calvià. It was discovered that his modus operandi involved recruiting skilled construction workers from their home countries and enticing them with well-paying jobs, good working conditions, and even residency permits in Spain. However, upon arrival on the island, the situation took a drastic turn. The entrepreneur guided the workers on how to enter as tourists and advised them of other requirements for border crossing to avoid complications. Once in Manacor, they were employed in private construction projects and renovations of hotel establishments. The work shifts exceeded 50 hours per week, while the monthly wage amounted to no more than 250 euros, with one individual receiving just 50 euros per month.

Thus far, a total of six victims linked to this entrepreneur have been identified. They currently reside in Spain without resources, as they had to cover their own travel expenses and maintenance costs during their time in the country. Moreover, lacking residency permits hinders their ability to generate income.
