BUy, sell or import VEHICLES

Are you looking to buy, sell, or import vehicles? Legal Management has got you covered!

1. IMPORT VEHICLES INTO SPAIN

Many vehicles are often imported into Spain.

On the one hand, many German citizens move here and want to take their car with them. On the other hand, the cars in other countries are generally cheaper and better equipped.

But what do we need to bear in mind here to import vehicles?

1 – The car must be in its original condition: The car must not be lower, nor have any additional running boards fitted which have not been registered. It should not have anything that did not come from the factory, etc.

This means that although the vehicle has passed the inspection in the country of origin, it will not pass the  inspection in Spain, as the regulations here are somewhat stricter.

2 – Import costs: In relation to the cost of importing, we have to consider the following things:

Firstly, we have fixed fees of around €200-300 for the inspection and the registration office.

In addition, if you do not have the COC document, this may have to be applied for, which can incur additional costs of around €200.

Finally, you pay the “matriculation tax”, which here in Spain depends on the list sales price, year of manufacture and CO2 emissions of the vehicle.

For example, this year I wanted to register a BMW X5, built in 2016, which would have cost me over 2500€ for the registration tax, while hybrid vehicles or all vehicles with CO2 emissions of less than 120 gr/km can be imported free of charge, meaning we would only pay the fixed costs of 200-500€.

2. WHY HYBRID OR ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE EXTREMELY WORTHWHILE

Above all, on the island it is very worthwhile to own an electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid.

The purchase of hybrid vehicles is heavily subsidized: cheaper cars, lower road tax and cheaper insurance

The installation of a charging station is also subsidized by the state: The state covers 70-80% of the installation costs

As long journeys are impossible on the island, the electric autonomy of the vehicles is usually more than sufficient.

In some cases, it is even possible for the charging costs of the vehicle to be partially or fully reimbursed.

Insider tip: Importing a hybrid or electric vehicle costs less than 500€ (no matriculation tax is paid due to the low CO2 emissions).

3. WHAT NEEDS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE INSTALLATION OF A CHARGING STATION?

Since the incorporation of the European Bolkestein Directive, governments have been obliged to avoid the use of licenses wherever possible.

This also applies to the installation of a charging station. So what do we have to do to be able to install a charging station?

As a tenant: As a tenant, you can easily install a charging station as soon as your landlord has given you permission.

As the owner of a property that is part of a residential community: You must notify the president of the community by letter. The community may not refuse installation under any circumstances.

As the owner of a detached property: You can install the charging station without further ado.

What about the costs?

The cost of the charging station itself is around €500-800.

The installation can cost several thousand euros, but, as I said, it is subsidized by the state, which is why the costs are usually less than €1000.

In total, you pay an average of €1500-1800.
